We have previously examined the troubles that wide receiver Terrell Owens has had regarding the $5,000 monthly child support payment owed to one of his children's mothers. After failing to pay and show up for a scheduled hearing, an arrest warrant was issued. However, it was reported this week that Owens has avoided jail time by paying the child support.
Owens had previously tried to have his payments lowered due to the fact that he is an unsigned professional football player who is currently recovering from knee surgery. However, he failed to show up for the hearing that was scheduled to review the amount he is currently required to pay.
After not showing up for the court date because of his participation in a publicized workout intended to interest teams in his recovery from the surgery, the warrant was issued for his arrest.
According to a spokeswoman for Owens, though, he had made an attempt to have his court date changed. However, he did not have proper legal representation upon making the request.
The warrant for his arrest has since been recalled after he paid the requested child support obligation. It remains to be seen what will happen to the amount of the future payments he must make. Adjustments may be made due to the dramatic change in his financial status, but whatever happens it is important that he stay in good standing with the court going forward.
Cases involving child support can be highly emotional and complex situations. Owens has said that although he loves his daughter, his involvement with her mother was "a mistake" which may have created more friction in the legal proceedings. As long as he retains the proper legal representation and abides by the orders set by the court, hopefully he can avoid future troubles and both sides will be satisfied.
